European Parliamentarians support free InterRail tickets for 18-year-olds

Young Europeans might receive a free InterRail pass on their 18th birthday in the future. During the EP plenary on Tuesday, October 4th, MEPs and representatives of the European Commission discussed the Free InterRail initiative, proposed by EPP Group Chairman Manfred Weber, and gave it an overwhelming support.

The idea behind the proposal is to give young Europeans an opportunity to experience Europe and at the same time promote a travel mode with low greenhouse gas emission.

The initiative plans to give a free InterRail pass to all EU citizens or legally residing individuals as soon as they turn 18, enabling them to travel the wide railway network throughout Europe. In member states without InterRail Connection (e.g. Estonia, Latvia or Malta), other modes of transport might be used free of charge.

EU Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc called the proposal an “excellent idea” and announced to conduct further analyses on the matter.
